Winter Tales – Short Story Workshops 2019
Friends of the Barwon Heads Community Library Inc. joined with the Barwon Heads Arts Council to present award-winning local author Dorothy Johnston for ‘Winter Tales’, a series of 3 short story workshops to be held at the Barwon Heads Community Library. On Sundays June 23rd, July 21st and August 25th from 2 – 4 pm. The age range was 10 years and older. Cost was $65 for all 3 workshops.

BHAC have been fortunate enough over the last few years to have been able to offer our membership performances by acclaimed Melbourne based Opera Company ‘Emotionworks’. Emotionworks combine different musical genres and vocal styles, such as jazz, blues, rock and Latin to traditional re formatted operas. This appeals to both traditional and contemporary audiences and also to a broad range of musical tastes.

‘Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti’ – Barwon Heads Community Hall – June 2019
Emotionworks condense Mozart’s classic comedy opera and fuse it with 1950’s Rock and Roll in this swinging, action packed, retro inspired production. Great music and heaps of fun.
‘Don Giovanni’ – Spiegeltent, Barwon Heads – January 2018
‘The Don’, typical bad boy of the opera world is referenced as a rock legend living by the mantra ‘live fast, die young’. Mozarts’ beautiful music, and mixed with our favourite rock classics, made this a performance to remember.
‘La Traviata’ – Barwon Heads Community Hall – March 2017
This performance is set in a strip club, Verdi’s epic tragedy La Traviata. This performance is fused with classic jazz songs of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and referenced many of history’s greatest female sex icons and featuring a bit of cheekiness thrown in. We had another packed Hall this time and the audience loved it!

‘Carmen’ – Barwon Heads Community Hall – January 2016
Blood, sex, murder and intrigue in this cabaret version. Fast moving, irreverent and very funny – this is opera in its most essential form. Using a mix of musical genres and vocal styles and featuring great singing, flamenco and salsa dancing. This one packed out the Hall had our audience on their feet and dancing.

Meet the Authors – 2017

Judith Brett is Emeritus Professor of Politics at La Trobe University. Her latest book is a biography of Alfred Deakin, The Enigmatic Mr Deakin. Among her publications are Robert Menzies’ Forgotten People, Australian Liberals and the Moral Middle Class: From Alfred Deakin to John Howard, and the edited collection Political Lives.
She has this to say about her new biography: ‘I have thought for a long time that we needed a new one volume biography of Deakin which would bring this fascinating and influential man alive for the contemporary reader. There are two previous biographies. The first was written by Walter Murdoch shortly after Deakin’s death and it assumes a great deal of knowledge by the reader. The second, by John La Nauze, was published in 1965. It is rather heavy going with a great deal of detailed political history when Deakin is barely in the frame. It also deals poorly with his intense and complex religious life and his family relationships. After trying and failing to interest a couple of skilled biographers in the project, I decided to do it myself. ‘

Diane Fahey lives in Clifton Springs on the Bellarine Peninsula.
She is the author of twelve poetry collections, most recently A House by the River. The Wing Collection: New & Selected Poems and The Stone Garden: Poems from Clare were both shortlisted for major book awards. Sea Wall and River Light, a collection of poems set in Barwon Heads, received the ACT government’s Judith Wright Poetry Award in 2007.
Among her awards for individual poems are the Newcastle Poetry Prize and the Wesley Michel Wright Award. Diane has received literary grants from the Victorian and South Australian Governments, and from the Australia Council, including a grant in 2014 to support the writing of a book on the West of Ireland. She took part in Australian Poetry’s 2013 International Poetry Tour of Ireland.
Craig Sherborne is the author of six books including the novels Tree Palace, shortlisted for the 2015 Miles Franklin Award and The Amateur Science of Love winner of the 2012 Melbourne Prize for Best Writing. His memoir Muck, won the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Non-fiction and Hoi Polloi was shortlisted for the Queensland and Victorian Premier’s Awards.
Sherborne has also written two volumes of poetry, and his journalism and poetry have appeared in most of Australia’s leading literary journals and anthologies. He has a new novel to be published by Text in 2018.
