Artist Statement

Helen Kocis Edwards explores human/nature relationships through imagery reminiscent of story books and fairy tales referencing the history of this integration within fables. Oil, in and watercolour on canvas paintings, and prints on paper in 2D, 3D and artist books investigate this interconnectedness. The work seeks to disrupt the human/nature binary by interweaving and connecting figures, man-made and natural elements. An experimental, organic, layered, print process of monoprinting using local leaf species and cut out stencils from discarded plastic integrates the pieces creating a dialogue between the parts. The notion that this interconnectedness has reciprocal and beneficial effects; physically, emotionally and environmentally is considered.
